Character Makeup Course

18 Days (6 weeks)

This 6 weeks class is comprised of techniques for injury simulation, facial hair application, bald caps and old-age makeup.

It covers everything needed to create realistic simulated effects and characters. Students will learn both two-dimensional (using only makeup) and three-dimensional (using gelatin and silicone) character techniques.

Character Makeup -  18 DAY

Duration:  18 day (3 days in a Week for 6 weeks)

Time: 10.00am - 1.00pm

This course is designed for everyone who wants to learn & understand how to break the script and built character in real prosthetic makeup. This intensive 6 weeks course will give you all the insights of techniques & processes of how to create film characters.

This is an intensive makeup course, Nahush will let everyone get involved and help make the prosthetic appliances from sculpting, moulding, running the pieces to painting and applying them onto each other. It’ll give everyone involved a real hands on feel to the course!

Nahush will be bringing over 20 years experience from the film industry into the Academy, so the quality you’ll see will be second to none!

You don’t need any previous experience with makeup or prosthetics, you will learn everything during the course and Nahush will be your main tutor!

COURSE CONTENT

  • Health and safety

  • Going through all the tools and materials you will be using during the course

  • The theory behind Prosthetics and film industry

  • Sculpting flat prosthetics (wounds, cuts, scars etc.)

  • Moulding flat pieces

  • Creating old age makeup

  • Hair laying techniques for beard and moustache

  • Wigs, application and understanding different types of wigs

  • Burns , 1st degree, 2nd degree and 3rd degree burnsBald cap application

  • Define highlight and shadow and be able to apply those concepts in a film and television situation.

  • Properly light and shade the basic shapes and define the terms associated with the process.

  • Highlight and shade the nasal-labial folds.

  • Highlight and shade the forehead and temples with cream make-up.

  • Apply general highlight and shading for the eyes.

  • Highlight and shadow the three possible types of cheekbones.

  • Highlight and shadow the jaw-line.

  • Apply highlight and shadow the neck.

  • Create wrinkles on the human face, and be able to identify the best locations for creating wrinkles.

  • Properly add age spots and vein work to enhance and complete the aging process.

  • Properly use stippling to enhance the aging application.

  • Apply hair white to create a graying effect for hair to enhance the aging application.

  • Create and complete an “old age” character make-up, bringing together all of the techniques learned in class so far in 30 minutes.

  • Hair Preparation and Application

  • Properly prepare, straighten, and save crepe wool for use in the creation of beards and other facial hair.

  • Hackle hair for preparation of use

  • Color match and blend hair materials.

  • Properly apply hair to the Tuffie head and will be able to lay the hair at an angel using the bevel cut.

  • Apply a mustache and eyebrows with crepe wool.

  • Apply sideburns to a Tuffie head and a model.

  • Aging Stipple Apply an “Age Stipple” application.

  • Beard

  • Lay a beard in the proper growth direction.

  • Hand-lay goatees and beards.

  • Ventilate a hair piece and apply a ventilated piece to a model.

  • Bald Cap Unit

  • Decide which type of bald cap is best suited for a given project and to communicate to production the strengths and weaknesses of each of the different types of caps available.

  • Apply a vinyl bald cap.

  • Creating effects

  • 1st degree burns

  • 2nd degree burns

  • 3re degree burns

  • deep cuts, gashes 

  • Running silicone prosthetic appliances

  • Applying flat pieces onto each other

  • Sculpting on the face cast (injuries, wounds, scars etc.)

  • Moulding prosthetics

  • Applying appliances onto each other

  • Painting prosthetics 

  • Using different types of blood, bruise gels and paint
